Cubic Decimeter (dm³) and Cubic Meter (m³)

What is a Cubic Meter?

A cubic meter (m³) is the SI unit of volume and is defined as the volume of a cube with edges one meter long. In everyday life, it is often used to measure large volumes, such as the volume of a room, the contents of a swimming pool, or the capacity of a large package.

What is a Cubic Decimeter?

A cubic decimeter (dm³) is a unit of volume equal to the volume of a cube with sides one decimeter long. The decimeter itself is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one-tenth of a meter. Therefore, a cubic decimeter is the same as a liter, which means that this unit is often used in everyday measurement, for example for measuring the capacity of a beverage bottle.

The Ratio between m³ and dm³

The relationship between cubic meters and cubic decimeters is simple: 1 cubic meter is equal to 1000 cubic decimeters. This is because 1 meter is equal to 10 decimeters, and when converting to cubic units, this conversion factor must be cubed (10³ = 1000).

So to convert from cubic meters to cubic decimeters, you need to multiply the volume in cubic meters by 1000.

1 cubic meter = 1,000 cubic decimeter

Conversely, to convert from cubic decimeters to cubic meters, you divide the volume in cubic decimeters by 1000.

1 cubic decimeter = 0.001 cubic meter

Example

If you have a box that is exactly one cubic meter in size, that box could contain 1000 liters of water, because a liter is the same as a cubic decimeter. So that same box would also be 1000 cubic decimeters.
