How to calculate a cylinder?

A cylinder is a three-dimensional geometric figure with two circular ends (the base) and a straight side. This shape is often found in nature and the built environment, such as in the form of trees, towers, and canned goods.

There are two main dimensions you often have to calculate for a cylinder: the surface and the volume.

Calculating the volume of a cylinder

The volume of a cylinder measures the amount of space inside it. This can be important when packaging liquids or when designing a building. The volume of a cylinder is calculated using the formula:

V = πr²h

Where:
- V is the volume
- r is the radius of the base (the distance from the center of the circle to the edge)
- h is the height of the cylinder (the distance between the two bases)
- π (Pi) is a constant with an approximate value of 3.14159

Calculating the surface area of a cylinder

The surface area of a cylinder is the total surface area of the outside, including the top and bottom. It is calculated using the formula:

A = 2πrh + 2πr²

Where:
- A is the surface area
- r is the radius of the base
- h is the height of the cylinder
- π (Pi) is a constant with an approximate value of 3.14159

When calculating the volume and surface area of a cylinder, it's important to ensure that all measurements are in the same units (e.g. all in meters or all in centimeters) otherwise, you will get an incorrect result.
